Vitamin A

Life Extension - Health And Medical Findings

The importance of Healthy vitamin A cannot be overstated-it is needed for healthy eyesite, in the development of our bones, sexual health, and in the division of our cells.

It is also critical in what is called cell differentiation-the biochemical process where cells are transformed into different organs, like the brain, the lungs, our muscles, and even in the development of blood.

The Immune System

Vitamin A helps regulate healing by the immune system, which helps prevent or fight off infections by making white blood cells that destroy harmful bacteria and viruses. Vitamin A also helps lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell, fight infections more effectively.

Vitamin A contributes to the healthy surface linings of the eyes. It also protects the lining of our airways, our urinary tract, and the intestines.

When those linings break down, it becomes easier for bacteria and viruses to enter the body and cause infection. Vitamin A also helps the skin and mucous membranes function as a barrier against these outside biological invaders.

There are basically two types of vitamin A:

Animal Derived Vitamin A

The Vitamin A found in foods that come from animals is called preformed vitamin A. Our bodies absorb this in the form of retinol, wich is one of the most bioavailable forms of vitamin A.

Some foods that contain this bioavailable form of vitamin A are fortified food products-where the manufacture adds preformed vitamin A, liver, and milk with the fat still in it. The body has the ability to convert retinol into other forms that are needed for the various processes performed for good health.

Plant Derived Vitamin A

Vitamin A that is found in colorful fruits and vegetables is called provitamin A carotenoid. This can be converted into retinol in the body.

A substantial amount of vitamin A that is consumed by men and women is in the form of provitamin A carotenoids.

More About Animal Vitamin A

Vitamin A derived from animals is more bioavailable and is utilized much better by the body than plant based vitamin A. The Vitamin A that comes from fruit and vegetables is just not very well absorbed by the human body. This why supplementation of vitamin A is such a good idea, especially if you are a vegetarian!
