Is Vitamin B12 Important? How Healthy Is It For You?

Life Extension - Health And Medical Findings

Vitamin B12 is necessary for a healthy brain and nervous system. It is soluble by water and is known as being one of the eight B vitamins that are essential for a healthy life.

Metabolism And The Process of Energy Development

In science, we learn that vitamin B12 is used in the metabolism of each of our cells. Some of the processes that are dependent on B12 are DNA development, energy production, and the creation of fatty acids-which are critical to brain health.

To metabolize, means the breaking down of our food into smaller components, and then the absorption of these smaller components into our blood stream where they travel to the various places within our body that need it for the production of energy.

Healthy B12 And Pernicious Anemia

When the disease, pernicious anemia was discovered, it was found to be caused by the body's inability to develop a substance called intrinsic factor.

Apparently, this is the result of having an autoimmune condition that destroys the parietal cells within the stomach-these parietal cells are what secrete the bio-chemical substance-intrinsic factor.

Without intrinisc factor, the body is no longer able to absorb vitamin B12. This creates a serious B12 defficiency and many people with this condition must have B12 shots on a regular basis.

Vitamin B12 is manufactured by a process called bacterial fermentation and these supplements are readily available to the consumer.

There are other types of vitamin B12 deficiencies but we will leave that for another discussion. People with a B12 defficiency, who do not have pernicious anemia, can get the B12 they need by taking supplements and eating the right foods.
